Interview with Positively Oakes owner and boss Jess Oakes

March 30, 2015

I am so blessed to be able to collaborate and interview the lovely Jess Oakes from Positively Oakes   and don't forget to read all the way to the bottom for Special Discount code for all my readers! You will receive 15% off your purchase!

Thank you for the interview with me. For the readers that don't follow your shop, tell us a little bit about your shop and blog. I have a couple questions for you so people will be able to get to know you and your business better.

Positively Oakes was created for one sole purpose, realness. Here, we chat and celebrate Motherhood, Mom-bossness, dance to the song Happy often, spread positive awareness and get our shop on.  You’ll find us chatting about Motherhood often, this is close to Jess’ heart, she struggled with infertility for years and finally is expecting her little bundle of joy and feels an extreme importance in being a Mom. We chat about the good, the bad and the ugly, recommend the latest and greatest in baby products and like we said keep it real and honest with you. With Motherhood comes being a Mom Boss. A Mom Boss is a number of things; a warrior who tames little babes and helps them grow and develop while tackling all the work around her and attempting to stay sane. Recently at Positively Oakes we created the campaign #dontwastehappy where we promote being yourself, being happy and not letting anything bring you down—this is where our Positive awareness comes into play. You can read more about it and join us, here. We want every person to feel important, strong, and know they can do anything they put their mind to.
Jess also creates the cutest little accessories over in their shop section of their site and their items have been featured on Cupcake Mag, Buzzfeed and various other publications.
1. What was your inspiration to start your own business and shop?

I love people, that is my main inspiration. I want to surround myself with positive people, help and inspire. I wanted to be able to do something that was close to my heart and still stay home with my babies one day. The inspiration behind the shop part of my site came entirely from my Grandma, she was an amazing seamstress and I learned everything I know about sewing from her--this was a way for me to honor her memory and do something I love. As far as the blog, which is the majority of our site, I wanted a place where Moms could come to support each other, talk about hard things and keep things real.

2. What is some advice you can give others about starting their own blog and being successful with it?

PATIENCE. That's my biggest piece of advice. Sounds redundant I know...but I am totally serious. Everyone used to tell me this and I hated hearing it, but it's the truth. Your dream is not going to happen over night. It takes serious dedication and effort. I work 14 to 15 hours a day sometimes, actually most days and am constantly racking my brain for the next thing. But my advice, DON'T give up--keep going, even when things seem hard and like you're going to hit rock bottom. It will turn around and you will achieve your goals.

3. Congratulations on the soon arrival of your baby girl Blake. What are you looking forward to most about being a first time mother?

Oh my gosh, literally EVERYTHING! I can't wait to be a Mom. I have dreamt of this day since I was a little girl. I can't wait to spoil her and love her and dress her in cute clothes of course. I think what I am looking forward to the most at this second is snuggling her and watching my husband be a Dad--it's going to be amazing.

4. What are your favorite pregnancy essentials or products that you would recommend to others?

My go to thing right now is my favorite pair of distressed jeans from Motherhood Maternity--they're beyond comfy and pretty darn cute if I do say so myself. I also love cocoa butter, essential oils, my giant pink body pillow and my Preggo Leggings.

5. To end this interview tell us something funny that has happened to you during your pregnancy?

Oh..literally EVERYTHING. I thought I was a klutz a before, little did I know! But I think the funniest thing I have done would probably be when I cried over spilling my salad from Costa Vida (that's happened a few times over food..HA!) or when I put the ice cream in the microwave thinking it was the freezer. That's pregnancy brain for ya, right?!
